People looking for Render alternatives usually run into its pricing steps. The smallest always-on service is $7 a month for 512 MB, and the next size up is $25 for 2 GB, with nothing at 1 GB in between. Free web services spin down after 15 minutes without traffic and take about a minute to wake, free Postgres is deleted 30 days after creation, and full-stack preview environments need the Pro workspace at $25 a month plus compute.
Render gets a lot right. Web services, background workers, cron jobs and private services are all first-class, it runs in five regions, and since April 2026 its workspace plans have no seat fees.
Below are five Render alternatives with what each costs for a small always-on app and where each one fits better or worse than Render.

Best for: A 1 GB always-on app with a database for $10, and an AI coding agent
EthioDeploy builds your GitHub repo into a container on every push, with no Dockerfile, for Node.js, Python, Go, Ruby, PHP and static sites. The plan price includes the database and branch previews, and each project has an AI coding agent that edits and runs your code in a sandbox, then opens a pull request.
Free runs 1 project (256 MB, sleeps after 30 minutes idle) with a 512 MB database that doesn't expire. Pro is $10/month: always on, 1 GB per container, a 5 GB database, custom domains and 1 branch preview per project. Business is $30/month: 2 GB per container, a 20 GB database, 2 previews per project and 5 team seats.
Best for: Paying only for the RAM and CPU you use
Railway bills per second for each service's memory and CPU, with no fixed instance sizes. Databases are one-click templates, PR environments are created automatically, and it builds with Railpack or a Dockerfile.
Hobby is $5/month including $5 of usage; Pro is $20/month per workspace. RAM is about $10 per GB-month and CPU about $20 per vCPU-month, so 1 GB costs about $10 plus CPU. Egress is $0.05 per GB, volumes $0.15 per GB-month.
Best for: Running in many regions close to users
Fly.io runs apps as Machines (lightweight VMs) in 17 regions. It builds from a Dockerfile, buildpacks or a prebuilt image, and machines can stop when idle and start on the next request.
No free tier for new organizations, only a trial of 2 hours of machine runtime or 7 days. A shared-cpu-1x machine is $3.69/month for 512 MB and $6.70 for 1 GB in the cheapest regions. Managed Postgres starts at $38/month.
Best for: A 1 GB container from a large, established cloud
App Platform builds with buildpacks for Go, Node.js, PHP, Python, Ruby, Rust, .NET and Bun, or from a Dockerfile. Workers and jobs (including cron-scheduled ones) cover the rest of a typical app.
512 MiB is $5/month, 1 GiB $10 (fixed, single instance) or $12 (shared, can scale), 2 GiB $25. A dev Postgres is $7/month; managed Postgres starts at $15.15. The free tier covers 3 static sites only.
Best for: Teams that want the original PaaS workflow and add-on marketplace
Heroku runs apps on dynos built with buildpacks, with Procfile process types, review apps, Heroku Scheduler and a large add-on marketplace. In February 2026 it moved to a sustaining engineering model focused on stability rather than new features.
Eco is $5/month for 1,000 shared dyno hours and sleeps after 30 minutes. Basic is $7 per dyno, Standard-1X $25 and Standard-2X (1 GB) $50. Postgres starts at $5/month and Key-Value Store at $3.
You need 1 GB and a database without paying for 2 GB
Pick EthioDeploy. Pro at $10 a month gives a 1 GB container, a 5 GB Postgres, MySQL or Redis and a branch preview. On Render that is a $25 service plus a database.
Your traffic is spiky or mostly idle
Pick Railway. Per-second billing with optional sleep means you pay for what runs, though the bill varies month to month.
Your users are on several continents
Pick Fly.io. 17 regions, the most on this list, and 1 GB machines from $6.70 a month.
You rely on cron jobs, private services and disks
Pick Stay on Render. Few alternatives match its range of service types. If price is the only issue, no seat fees since April 2026 may already have helped.
Why does my Render app take a minute to load?
Render's free web services spin down after 15 minutes without inbound traffic and take about a minute to spin back up on the next request. Paid instances, from $7 a month, stay running.
What is the cheapest Render alternative?
For a 1 GB always-on app with Postgres, EthioDeploy Pro at $10 a month includes both. Fly.io's 1 GB machine is $6.70 but its Managed Postgres starts at $38, and DigitalOcean's 1 GB container is $10 to $12 plus $7 for a dev database.
Does Render's free Postgres expire?
Yes. A free Render Postgres database expires 30 days after creation, then has a 14-day grace period before it is deleted. EthioDeploy's free 512 MB database doesn't expire.
Does Render still charge per seat?
No. Since April 23, 2026 Render's workspace plans (Hobby, Pro at $25 a month, Scale at $499) have no seat fees. Compute is billed on top of the workspace plan.
Which Render alternatives have cron jobs?
Railway, DigitalOcean App Platform and Heroku (Scheduler) have scheduled jobs, and Fly.io can run machines on an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly schedule. EthioDeploy has no cron service type; run a scheduler inside a Background Worker.
How do I move a Render service to EthioDeploy?
Create a project from the same GitHub repo; the stack is detected, so the build and start commands usually need no changes. Copy your environment variables into a .env file and run ethiodeploy env push .env. Add a Postgres addon, which sets DATABASE_URL for you.
